Waverly is an English given name transferred from a surname and literary place name. Sir Walter Scott popularized Waverley through his 1814 novel of that title; the deeper place-name etymology is uncertain. Later American places and institutions adopted the spelling Waverly. The name has no established connection with ocean waves despite modern associations. A notable bearer is American federal judge Waverly D. Crenshaw Jr. Waverley remains the traditional British literary spelling.
