Wayne comes from an occupational surname meaning "wagon maker," from Old English wægn, "wagon." Its given-name use was aided by actor John Wayne (1907–1979); another famous bearer is Canadian hockey player Wayne Gretzky (1961–), widely regarded as the sport's greatest player.
