Meaning and history
Wendell is a name derived from the German and Dutch surname Wendel, itself based on the given name Wendel. In America, it has also been used in honor of the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (1809–1894) and his son, Supreme Court justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841–1935). The elder Holmes’s middle name came from his mother’s maiden name, which was brought to America by a Dutch ancestor in the form Wendel, with the extra l added later.
