From an Old German name formed from warin, meaning “aware” or “cautious,” and heri, meaning “army,” Werner was the name of a 13th-century boy from Oberwesel, Germany who was once considered a saint but is no longer recognized as such by the Church. A notable modern bearer was the German physicist Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976).
