Meaning and history
From an English surname derived from the Middle English nickname Wildbor, meaning “wild boar,” Wilbur was borne by Wilbur Wright (1867–1912), one of the Wright brothers who invented the first successful airplane. Wright was named for the Methodist minister Wilbur Fisk (1792–1839), and the name is also known from Wilbur, the pig protagonist of E. B. White’s children’s novel Charlotte’s Web (1952).
