Meaning and history
Wilfred means “desiring peace,” from Old English willa, meaning “will” or “desire,” and friþ, meaning “peace.” It was associated with Saint Wilfrid, a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon bishop, fell out of use after the Norman Conquest, and was revived in the 19th century.
