From an English surname derived from a place name meaning “row of houses by a wood” in Old English, Woodrow was borne by American president Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), whose middle name came from his mother’s maiden name and whose first name was Thomas. The name became popular during his candidacy and presidency from 1912 to 1921, reaching 44th place in 1913, but then quickly declined.
