Meaning and history
Wybert is an English form of the Germanic name Wigbert. It combines wig, “battle,” with beraht, “bright” or “famous,” yielding “bright in battle.” Saint Wigbert was an eighth-century Anglo-Saxon missionary and abbot who worked in Germany alongside Saint Boniface. The spelling Wybert is rare and reflects later English adaptation. Historical bearer Wybert Reeve was a nineteenth-century English actor and theatre manager; modern use is uncommon.
