Meaning and history
Wystan is an English form of the Old English masculine name Wigstan. It combines wig, “battle,” with stan, “stone,” giving the traditional meaning “battle stone.” Saint Wigstan, also called Wystan, was a ninth-century Mercian prince and martyr whose shrine became a place of pilgrimage at Repton. The best-known modern bearer was the Anglo-American poet W. H. Auden, whose full first name was Wystan; his work made the uncommon form familiar in literary circles.
