Meaning and history
Xavier derives from the Basque place name Etxeberria, meaning "the new house," from etxe, "house," and berri, "new." It was the surname of Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552), a Jesuit priest born in a village of that name who served as a missionary in India, Japan, China, and elsewhere in East Asia. Honoured as the patron saint of the Orient and missionaries, his surname was subsequently adopted as a given name, chiefly among Catholics.
