Xerxes is the Greek form of the Old Persian name 𐎧𐏁𐎹𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎠 (Xšayarša), meaning “ruler over heroes.” It was the name of a 5th-century BC king of Persia, son of Darius the Great, who attempted an invasion of Greece that ended in defeat at the Battle of Salamis.
