Meaning and history
Ya occurs in several unrelated naming traditions. In Chinese it may represent characters such as 雅, “elegant” or “refined,” 亚, “second” or “Asia,” and others, so its meaning depends on the character and tone. In Hebrew, Ya or Yah can be a short theophoric element referring to the divine name. It may also be a nickname in other languages. The very short romanization therefore has no universal meaning. Reliable notable exact-name bearers are difficult to identify without their original script.
