Meaning and history
Yolande is the French form of Yolanda, descended from the medieval name Violante. Its deeper origin is uncertain; it has often been associated with Latin viola, “violet,” but that may reflect later reinterpretation. Yolande of Aragon was a powerful fifteenth-century duchess who supported Charles VII during the Hundred Years’ War. Notable modern bearers include French actor Yolande Moreau and French singer Yolande Gigliotti, better known as Dalida. The name has strong medieval European history.
