Zacchaeus is the English biblical form of Greek Zakchaios, from Hebrew Zakkai, meaning “pure” or “innocent.” In the Gospel of Luke, Zacchaeus is a wealthy tax collector who climbs a sycamore tree to see Jesus and then promises restitution after welcoming him. His story makes the name associated with repentance and transformation. Modern use is uncommon. Notable bearer Zacchaeus Okoth is a Kenyan Roman Catholic archbishop.
