Zane entered English use from a surname of uncertain origin. It was established as a given name by the American western novelist Zane Grey, whose middle name preserved his mother's maiden name. The spelling later inspired the variant Zayne and gained a modern, independent identity. Notable bearers include author Zane Grey and musician Zane Lowe.
