Meaning and history
Zara entered English literary use in the seventeenth century, when William Congreve gave it to a North African queen in The Mourning Bride, probably drawing on the Arabic name Zahra, associated with brightness and flowers. It gained wider British attention when Princess Anne named her daughter Zara in 1981. Notable bearers include equestrian and royal family member Zara Tindall and actress Zaraah Abrahams.
