In Russian and Central Asian contexts it is often associated with zar or Persian zarr, “gold,” and can suggest “golden.” It may also be influenced by the title tsarina, the wife of a tsar, though the names are not identical in origin. In South Asia it is a familiar Muslim feminine name. Notable bearers include Indian actor Zarina Wahab and Russian-American artist Zarina Hashmi.
