It has major early Islamic significance through Zayd ibn Harithah, a companion and adopted son of the Prophet Muhammad, and Zayd ibn Thabit, a scribe associated with compiling the Quran. The spelling Zaid is another common transcription. Notable modern bearers include Kuwaiti racing driver Zaid Ashkanani, using the variant spelling.
