Meaning and history

Meaning uncertain; it may derive from Arabic زين (zayn), meaning “beauty,” and أب (ʾab), meaning “father,” or from the name of a fragrant flowering tree, or it may be an Arabic form of Zenobia, the name of a pre-Islamic queen of Palmyra. Zaynab was also the name of a daughter, a granddaughter, and two wives of the Prophet Muhammad.
