Zelda has two main origins: in Yiddish it is probably a feminine form of Zelig, associated with happiness or blessing, while in English it has also been used as a short form of Griselda. The name became strongly associated with American writer and socialite Zelda Fitzgerald, after whom Nintendo's Princess Zelda was named. Another notable bearer was actress Zelda Rubinstein.
