Zephaniah comes from the Hebrew name צְפַנְיָה (Tsefanya), meaning “Yahweh has hidden,” from צָפָן (tsafan), “to hide,” and יָהּ (yah), a reference to the Hebrew God. It is also the name of one of the twelve minor prophets in the Old Testament and the author of the Book of Zephaniah.
