Meaning and history

Zeus is the name of a Greek god linked to the older Indo-European god *Dyēws, from the root *dyew- meaning “sky” or “shine.” In Greek mythology he was the chief of the gods, and after he and his siblings defeated the Titans, he ruled over the earth and humankind from Mount Olympus. He controlled the weather and wielded the thunderbolt. The name has cognates in other Indo-European languages, including Latin Jupiter, Sanskrit Dyaus, and Old Norse Tyr.
