Zinaida is a Russian, Ukrainian, and Greek-derived feminine name from ancient Greek Zēnais or Zēnaïs, meaning “of Zeus” or “belonging to Zeus.” Early Christian saints named Zenaida helped transmit the name despite its pagan theophoric origin. It became established in Eastern Europe through Orthodox tradition. Notable bearers include Russian poet Zinaida Gippius and Ukrainian gymnast Zinaida Turchyna, a celebrated handball player.
