Zita is an Italian feminine name traditionally explained as meaning “young girl” in a Tuscan dialect. It became known throughout Catholic Europe through Saint Zita of Lucca, a thirteenth-century domestic servant revered for her charity and devotion. Zita of Bourbon-Parma, the last empress of Austria, is another notable bearer.
