Meaning and history

Zsuzsanna is the Hungarian form of Susanna. Susanna derives from Hebrew Shoshannah, meaning “lily” and perhaps originally another flower. The biblical story of Susanna, a virtuous woman falsely accused by elders, gave the name lasting Jewish and Christian significance. Hungarian zs represents a sound like the s in “measure.” Notable bearers include Hungarian independence-era nurse Zsuzsanna Kossuth and Hungarian Olympic swimmer Zsuzsanna Jakabos. Zsuzsa is a common Hungarian short form.
