Aias

Aias is the ancient Greek form of Ajax. Its etymology is uncertain, although Greek myth sometimes linked it through wordplay with aiai, a cry of lament. Two warriors named Ajax fight in Homer’s Iliad: Ajax the Great, a formidable son of Telamon, and Ajax the Lesser, son of Oileus. Their stories gave the name an enduring heroic and tragic association. A notable modern bearer is German-Sudanese footballer Aias Aosman. Ajax is the usual English form.
