Meaning and history

This name comes from the Greek Αἴας (Aias), perhaps from αἰαστής (aiastes), meaning “mourner,” or αἶα (aia), meaning “earth” or “land.” In the Iliad, it belongs to two Greek heroes of the Trojan War, Ajax the son of Telamon and Ajax the son of Oileus. According to the story, Ajax Telamonian went mad with jealousy and killed himself after Achilles’ armor was awarded to someone else.
