Almira is a feminine name with more than one proposed source. It may be a form of the Arabic title amīra, “princess,” or a literary European formation related to names such as Elmira; its exact history is not certain. The name appeared in seventeenth-century drama and in Handel’s first opera, Almira. A notable bearer is Moldovan-French chess player Almira Skripchenko. Unrelated origins should not be compressed into one definitive meaning.
