Meaning and history
Elmira is a feminine name of uncertain and probably multiple origin. It may be related to the literary name Almira, influenced by Arabic amīra, “princess,” or to European names beginning with El-. The New York city of Elmira helped familiarize the spelling, but its place-name origin is also disputed. Notable bearers include Azerbaijani public official Elmira Süleymanova and Russian operatic soprano Elmira Abdrazakova. One universal ancient translation should not be assumed.
Elmira rose from #949 to #942 for girls between 1935 and 1937. Its highest annual birth count came in 1921, with 122 births.
