Amir means commander or prince in Arabic and was originally a title of authority, preserved in English in the word emir. It has long been used across Arabic-, Persian- and Urdu-speaking communities and later spread more widely. Notable bearers include Israeli politician Amir Peretz and American basketball player Amir Johnson.
