Antonio is the Spanish and Italian form of Antonius, related to Anthony. Common in Italy since the 14th century, it led Spanish boys' names in the 1950s and the following decade. Bearers include painter Antonio Pisanello (c. 1395–1455), composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741), and the central character of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice (1596).
