Arabella is a medieval Scottish name, probably a variant of Annabel, and has long been linked by form to Latin orabilis, meaning “invokable, yielding to prayer,” which influenced how it was often recorded. Separately, it was also an older name for the city of Irbid in Jordan, from Greek Ἄρβηλα (Arbela).
