Meaning and history
Benedict comes from Latin Benedictus, meaning "blessed" and derived from benedico, "to speak well of" or "commend." After 6th-century Saint Benedict founded the Benedictines, it became common among Christians and was borne by 16 popes; it reached England in the 12th century and became very popular. American general Benedict Arnold (1741–1801), who defected to Britain during the Revolution, was another bearer.
