Bertrand is a name derived from the Old German elements beraht, meaning “bright,” and rant, meaning “rim of a shield.” It has long been confused with Bertram, and the two names have merged to some degree. Notable bearers include Saint Bertrand, an 11th-century bishop of Comminges in France, and the English philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872–1970).
