Cosimo is the Italian form of Cosmas, from Greek Kosmas. The name is commonly connected with kosmos, meaning “order,” “decoration,” or “world,” though its precise development as a personal name is not completely certain. Saints Cosmas and Damian, traditionally twin physicians and martyrs, gave it Christian importance. It also became closely associated with Florence through statesman Cosimo de’ Medici. Another notable bearer was Renaissance painter Cosimo Rosselli.
