Meaning and history
Cúchulainn is the name of the great warrior hero of the Ulster Cycle in Irish mythology. Born Sétanta, he takes the name Cú Chulainn, “Culann’s hound,” after killing a smith’s guard dog and promising to replace it. He is the central champion of the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge.
