Meaning and history
Alternate transcription of Greek Δήμη, Ντίμι, or Ντίμη (see Dimi), and also a short form of Demetria. The name became popular in the United States in the late 1980s because of American actress Demi Moore (1962–), although Moore has said she was born as Demi and was named after a makeup product despite some sources claiming her birth name was Demetria. Its popularity rose again after 2008 with the debut album of singer Demi Lovato (1992–), who pronounces the name differently from Moore; Lovato’s birth name is Demetria.
