Dick is a medieval English diminutive of Richard, a Germanic name meaning "brave ruler." Its altered initial probably arose from English pronunciation and the medieval custom of creating rhyming nicknames, as Richard became Rick and then Dick. Once common as an independent name, it is now used less often; famous bearers include actor Dick Van Dyke and American athlete Dick Fosbury, who transformed the high jump with the Fosbury Flop.
