Meaning and history
Dirk is a Dutch and Low German short form of Diederik. The name was borne by several counts of Frisia and Holland beginning in the 10th century, and it was popularized in the English-speaking world by actor Dirk Bogarde (1921–1999), who had some Dutch ancestry. It is also the Scots word for a type of dagger.
Dirk moved from #891 to #986 for boys between 1988 and 1989. Its highest annual birth count came in 1954, with 438 births.
