Meaning and history
Spanish name, possibly a shortened form of Santiago. In medieval records it was Latinized as Didacus, and it has also been suggested that it derives from Greek διδαχή (didache), meaning “teaching.” Saint Didacus, or Diego, was a 15th-century Franciscan brother based in Alcalá, Spain. Notable bearers of the name include the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez (1599–1660), the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera (1886–1957), and the Argentine soccer player Diego Maradona (1960–2020).
