Donatello is an Italian diminutive of Donato, from Late Latin Donatus, meaning “given,” often understood as “given by God.” Several early saints bore Donatus, helping preserve the name in Christian Europe. The defining bearer is Renaissance sculptor Donatello, born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, whose works helped transform early Renaissance art. Another bearer is Italian fashion designer Donatello Versace. The affectionate suffix does not alter the underlying meaning.
