Feminine form of the Greek name Δωρόθεος (Dorotheos), meaning “gift of god” from Greek δῶρον (doron), “gift,” and θεός (theos), “god”; Theodore uses the same elements in reverse order. Dorothea was borne by two early saints, including the 4th-century martyr Dorothea of Caesarea and the 14th-century Saint Dorothea of Montau, patron saint of Prussia.
