Dorothy derives from Greek Dorothea, combining dōron, “gift,” with theos, “god,” and means “gift of God.” Saint Dorothy of Caesarea helped preserve the name in Christian tradition, while Dorothy Gale in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz gave it major literary visibility. Dot is also used independently. Notable bearers include American softball player and physician Dot Richardson and English singer Dot Allison.
