Dollie is an English diminutive spelling of Dolly. Dolly traditionally developed as a pet form of Dorothy, from Greek Dorothea, meaning “gift of God,” but it has also been used for Dolores, a Spanish name referring to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary. The intended source therefore depends on the individual bearer. A notable bearer was English poet Dollie Radford, associated with late nineteenth-century socialist and literary circles. Dollie is also used independently.
