Meaning and history

Electra is the Latinized form of Greek Ἠλέκτρα (Elektra), from ἤλεκτρον (elektron) meaning “amber.” In Greek myth, she was the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra and the sister of Orestes, whom she aided in killing their mother and her lover Aegisthus to avenge Agamemnon’s murder. The name was also borne in Greek mythology by one of the Pleiades, daughters of Atlas and Pleione.
