Elsa is a short form of Elisabeth that is often used as an independent given name. In medieval German legend, Elsa von Brabant was the lover of the hero Lohengrin, and Richard Wagner later expanded her story in his opera Lohengrin (1850). The name saw a small rise in popularity after the 2013 release of Disney’s animated film Frozen, which featured a magical princess with this name.
