Short form of Elizabeth, though often used on its own, and of related names in other languages. It is best known as the name of the woman portrayed in Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. In the United States, Lisa was more popular than Elizabeth from 1958 to 1978 and ranked as the top American name from 1962 to 1969.
