Hans is a German short form of Johannes that is now used as an independent name. It has been very common in German-speaking Europe since the late Middle Ages and spread early to the Low Countries and Scandinavia. Notable bearers include the German portrait painter Hans Holbein (1497–1543) and the Danish fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875).
