Jan is a form of John used across Dutch, German, Scandinavian, Polish, Czech and other European languages, ultimately meaning "Yahweh is gracious." In English it can also be a feminine short form of Janet or Janice. Notable bearers include Dutch painter Jan van Eyck, Czech reformer Jan Hus and American singer Janis Joplin, who was sometimes called Jan.
