Jean has two closely related traditions. In French it is the masculine form of John, meaning "Yahweh is gracious," while in English and Scottish use it is also a feminine form related to Jeanne and Jane. The French name has been exceptionally common since the Middle Ages. Famous bearers include philosophers Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as American actress Jean Harlow.
